Detective Pikachu Sequel in Development

Details on Detective Pikachu Sequel Announced

In 2019, the neo-noir comedy Pokémon: Detective Pikachu was released, and it surprised audiences with its quality. With studios routinely rebooting and remaking previous hits, it seemed obvious that a sequel was in development, yet no updates had been released, until today when Deadline reported that Portlandia co-creator, Jonathan Krisel, is in negotiations to direct.

Krisel is no stranger to tackling oddball plots as seen on his previous co-created shows, Portlandia and Baskets. It is expected that his experience will bring a unique element to the anticipated film. In addition to Krisel’s inclusion, Chris Galletta has reportedly been attached to the screenplay. Galletta was behind the writing for ‘The Kings of Summer,’ an indie dramedy released in 2013.

Ryan Reynolds who voiced Pikachu in the first movie has not made any public comments about the upcoming sequel, but much to fans’ relief, Deadline’s sources say that he will have some part to play in the upcoming movie. The plot of the first movie followed a budding Pokémon trainer and a crime-solving Pikachu trying to unravel a vast pharmaceutical conspiracy.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu was set in the near future where computer animated Pokémon cohabit a world alongside humans, forming bizarre and often funny associations. The film was fun but not overly sugary and grossed $433.2 million at the box office on a budget of $150 million.

There have been rumours of a potential sequel since early 2019 when Legendary Entertainment announced that the 22 Jump Street writer Oren Uziel was signed on for the screenplay. However, there had been no further news on the project until now, leading fans to believe that the sequel may have been shelved indefinitely.

These recent updates have given fans hope that the sequel will eventually be released, and a Detective Pikachu 2 game is still currently in the works. While we wait for any further developments on the project, fans should be happy knowing that Ryan Reynolds and his hilarious portrayal of Pikachu will make a comeback.
