Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda Steps Down; Takashi Kiryu Set to Take Over

Takashi Kiryu is set to become CEO of video game publisher Square Enix, replacing Yosuke Matsuda after 10 years. The move aims to restructure the management team in order to keep up with the ever-evolving technological innovations in the industry. Matsuda had been advocating for NFTs and other blockchain-based digital assets in recent years, whilst Kiryu has experience exploring opportunities in the metaverse.

Square Enix faces challenges on many fronts such as a decreasing stock price, limited success beyond Mobile Gacha games and Final Fantasy, plus the recent cutting loose of crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal. Matsuda was bullish on crypto gaming and was excited by NFTs however, it is unclear if new CEO Kiryu will continue this trend.
